The Black Ball

FOR JUNIOR AND SENIORS -  DEBUTANTE / COTILLION BALL

THE BLACK BALL..Or also known as a debutante ball, sometimes called a coming-out party, is a formal ball that includes presenting debutantes during the social season. In order to be crowned King at The Black Ball, it requires prior instruction in social etiquette, yearly academic monitoring with the high school the student attends and appropriate morals through the workshops and programs.

Beaus are young men that escorts  Debutantes to the Black Ball

In our Cotillion program, we introduce young men to the tradition of becoming a beau, which means a mannerable gentleman escort a young lady to the Black Ball. A beau should have exceptional manners and know how to treat a lady with respect and courtesy. By participating in our program, young men will learn how to exude the correct mannerism as a young beau, how to conduct themselves during events, and present themselves with style and elegance.

What is a Cotillion?

A cotillion (also known as a French country dance) is a social dance, popular in 18th-century Europe and North America. Originally for four couples in square formation, it was a courtly version of an English country dance, the forerunner of the quadrille and, in the United States, the square dance.

What is a cotillion in black culture?

Historically, cotillions and debutante balls are rites of passage ceremonies for Black girls after being trained for so-called womanhood and presented with proper etiquette techniques.

What does a cotillion symbolize?

So the main purpose of a cotillion is to teach respectful manners to young people so they can go out into society and thrive. Debutante balls are different in that they celebrate the actual joining to society for young people.

Is cotillion a southern thing?

While both the cotillion and the debutante ball are important southern American traditions and have a lot in common, there are a few key differences. Cotillions are more focussed on teaching young people how to be respectful members of society.

What are the rules of cotillion?

This is also a time for parents to set an example and exhibit their own good manners to their children: Dress appropriately; arrive on time; don't chew gum; skip photos with flash; and for the love of all that's holy, please don't text and foxtrot. Nobody's that good at multitasking

What is the history of black debutantes?

Black American debutante balls can be traced back to 1778 in New York, when the first debutante was recorded by a newspaper, with the first official ball occurring in 1895 in New Orleans. Like their White counterparts, Black debutante balls present young girls from Black communities to society.
